Gaming tomorrow: update If anyone decided not to come over for gaming tomorrow because the games I listed sounded too geeky: I just bought Apples to Apples and Save Doctor Lucky, which might have broader appeal.
7:00, post if you need directions. Oh, and I forgot to mention in the last post: RSVP, so I'll know how many to expect.
See you tomorrow!

Gaming Monday Hey, guess what I forgot to post half a week ago.
Next Monday is boardgaming night at my place (email or leave a comment if you need directions), starting at 7:00. I'm thinking either Betrayal at House on the Hill or Mystery of the Abbey, depending on if we're in the mood for something light and random, or more of a brain buster.
So which would you all prefer?

Rainy day Huh, look at that. It's 3:00 already. I guess that means I won't be going to the Montreal Boardgames Meetup at 1:00 today. That's a shame - it's been so long since I've been. And since I won't be at Concordia anyway, and it's raining, I don't feel like rushing down to get there for 4:00 to see Guy Gavriel Kay speak. Especially since I believe that costs money.
Good - that's resolved. I will sit here today and hack on stuff. I kind of wanted to do that anyway. Can't help but think I'm missing out on Cool Stuff, though.

Scrabble! It's that time again! Sunday, at Divan Orange at 3:00, is the first Scrabble game of 2006, hosted by feygele and vierge_en_trop owners of the two best asses in town! I will be there, and you should be too.

The future is here! My Cheerios came with a full copy of Rollercoaster Tycoon 2. It's installing as we speak. Remember when they used to give away plastic cars and cardboard masks?

Grim Fandango I watched Triplettes de Belleville again while I was packing - and it really got me wanting to play Grim Fandango again. Something about the oversized cityscapes and the huge monolithic ships. So I figured I had just enough time to kill before leaving to catch my bus that I could find out if it worked under Wine on the old clunker of a computer I have now.
Except my copy is missing. Now I think of it, I seem to recall lending it to somebody. Somebody at NITI, perhaps. Did I lend it to any of you and forget to get it back?

It's finally really winter today... ...and man am I glad I don't live at the top of a steep hill anymore.
I just finished the second night in a row of spending all evening catching up on LJ - last night was because I hadn't read it since last Friday, and today was because I forgot to log in yesterday so I hadn't seen any friendslocked posts in that bunch.
The latest amusing trend in spam: "watch", "rolex" and all conceivable normal variants have now hit the big spam filters, so they're starting to advertise "wrist clocks".
Sunday I'm going to play Scrabble, as I've been doing every month. I haven't been announcing that cause I figured everybody on my friendslist already knew about the Scrabble meetups, but this week I decided that three different journals just isn't enough places.
Ok, when I put it that way it seems like I'm being an ass, but really, this week I started to become paranoid that people who read either my journal or PlaNit and may want to play Scrabble, but either didn't know about it or didn't realize they'd no anyone there. If this describes you, come on out and join us!
Ah, who am I kidding, I just feel left out being the only one who doesn't get to make an announcement.

What was I saying? Ok, I'm tired and I've lost track of all the stuff I was gonna post about. Let's see:
- My computer works again! It was just the damn CASE that was broken. Thanks pmccurdy! It would probably work with the original Compaq motherboard, too, but I could see capacitors starting to go on it so I decided to keep the new one that I bought, even though it was kind of expensive. That way at least I won't have to go through all this again in a month. I haven't gotten the energy to put the hard drive back in it yet - project for tomorrow evening, I guess.
- Sorry to miss out on Grumpy's/Hatters tonight. I wanted to stop by for an hour or so, but I really wanted to try and get this computer working tonight, since if I couldn't get it working I wanted to get my money back on the new motherboard, and tomorrow was the deadline for that.
- Holy crap, it's 3:00. I guess that means it's Wednesday, so Boardgame Thursday is tomorrow! I'll be bringing Carcassonne, at least - feel free to show up with whatever you want to play. Let's try the 24-hr coffee shop where we played Scrabble last weekend. There's a Second Cup on St-Laurent and Pins (that's the one where we met pphaneuf, sfllaw and elliptic_curve last night) - right across the street from it, on the same side of St-Laurent, is another coffee shop with a big 24 HOUR sign. That's where I'll be, starting at 7:00 tomorrow night. If it's too busy, I'll try to move elsewhere, so call me or post here if you plan to come but are going to be late.
And now, off to bed.

Gaming night... uh, day Since Thursday didn't happen, I'm going to the monthly Board Games Meetup at Concordia tomorrow, at 1:00. (Hall building, second floor mezzanine - take the escalator up and turn right.)
Anyone who's in the mood for gaming this weekend (psst, iangurudata!) should probably come join us.

No game night I just remembered I have a test on Friday and I have to study. Plus I've got some other stuff to get done that I want to get finished off tomorrow. So, no game night after all.
What's going on Friday? Anything?

Gaming Thursday Ok, I'd like to play more board games on Thursday. (Want to make this a semi-regular thing.) But I'm still looking for a place where people can drop in without having to RSVP. I didn't really like where we were last time - too big and empty, it felt lonely. My own house is too small, and I don't really feel comfortable scheduling my gaming night at somebody else's house and then inviting anybody who wants to come to drop in.
I was thinking that a good place would be Cafe L'Utopik, where we have the Scrabble meetups on the weekends. Last weekend there were a big group of chess players, our Scrabble crowd, and a couple of people playing Magic: The Gathering, so they're definitely used to having gamers in there, and it's pretty comfortable and has nice decor. The only thing is that I've only been there on the weekend during the day, so I'm not sure what it's like in the evening (although I imagine it's still pretty quiet).
So this week, I was thinking of getting a couple of people who RSVP to meet there, so that if it turns out to be too busy to play there we can head out somewhere else together. (Other people are still welcome to show up, since chances are I'm being paranoid, just I can't guarantee it'll work out unless you RSVP.) If it works out, we can start meeting there every week.

The stars are nearly right... I just bought Arkham Horror. No, I can't really afford it, but what can I say? The spell of the eastern sea was upon me.
I was going back and forth on whether to have another gaming night this week, or make it every two weeks, but hey - new game! No question now - gotta play again! Thursday again works for me: haven't figured out where yet, but mark it on your calendar. I'll post again later in the week, but if I forget, you'll be reminded of the coming of Games Night by various dreams and phantasms sent in the nethermost depths of night, which will be perceivable only by the most sensitive of artistic souls but will fill them with a nameless and dreadful horror. Should be fun!

Gaming night - the plan Ok, there's an overwhelming preference for Thursday, and more people interested than will fit in here. So gaming night will be next Thursday, at the Second Cup in Central Station (895 RUE DE LA GAUCHETIÈRE OUEST), at 7:00. (Will everybody be done work by then? I may change the time - I'll post again early next week as a reminder.) Everyone welcome! Feel free to bring anything you want to play.

Gaming night Time to start gaming again! I'm gonna start having board game nights at my place, once every two weeks or so I think. It's unfortunately too small to fit more than about 5 people, so tag this post if you're interested. I think it's too late to have one this week, but next week for sure. I think it's time to play Mystery of the Abbey again.
So, who's interested and what day do you prefer? Tuesday is out for me, but other than that any night is good. I was thinking Wednesday or Thursday. (Ah, crap - it doesn't matter for this week, because she's out of town, but vierge_en_trop requested one of those two nights, but I've forgotten which.)
I keep thinking I should end with something witty to get people more interested in coming, but I can never come up with anything. So imagine a stinger here.

Cool stuff For about 20 minutes today, I thought I had found the coolest thing ever published. But then I found something better:
First, you must get yourself in the right mindset to appreciate it, by watching this old US Nintendo ad. No, you can't turn it off after the first 5 seconds: watch it to the end. Trust me, you'll appreciate it in a minute.
Now see what the Japanese were up to just a few years later. Whew. For a minute there I was ashamed to have ever seen a Nintendo.

Weekend recap Last weekend was a good weekend. Friday evening, dropped by chez Hub and Nancy for the big Nexus bash which other people have covered so well, and a good time was had. On Saturday I - amazingly - got up in time to meet them for Dim Sum before Nex left, and - amazingly - only barely got lost. Then the weekend turned geeky.
At 1:00 it was off to Concordia for the Montreal Boardgames Meetup, recently moved to a Yahoo group due to Meetup's owners being greedy bastards. Played, let's see, "Zeus and Hera" (a pretty fun two-player card duel game), "Medici" (a nice and clean auction game - I suck at auction games, but this one was fun), and Tigris and Euphrates. Also watched a game of San Juan, the card game version of Puerto Rico, and wondered what Allison would think of it. Stayed there until about 6:00, had some supper, and then spent a few hours working on my comicwhispers panel, which turned out pretty well if I do say so. By this time I was up pretty late, and I'd gotten up pretty early, so I went to bed and slept until Sunday afternoon.
Sunday I watched almost 5 hours of Doctor Who, so that was good.
Monday - enh, Monday wasn't so great. Somewhere between Saturday and Monday I switched to nocturnal again, and thinking back I have no idea how it happened. I would've slept until 2:00 or so, but I got woken up by the postman delivering my 5-CD Out of Print Dragon Magazine Archive that I bought off ebay. I'm now the proud owner of 250 issues of Dragon magazine. Then of course I was so excited I read a couple of them, and then noticed it was getting on towards mid-afternoon and I was getting very tired so I went back to bed. Woke up at 10:30 feeling like it was 4 in the morning. Oops.

Need one more Paranoia player Like the subject says, I need one more Montreal-area player for Paranoia. (We're probably playing on Saturday, April 2nd, cause one of the players is out of town this weekend, unless I've lost a week somewhere, which is possible.) Who's interested?
Edit: No longer on April 2, some people are moving that day. Still looking for a date.
