Ok, fine, I'll join your stupid Facebook. I have an account now. I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing with it, but whatever - I assume this means I'll magically start getting invitations to things now.

Well, you won't get any invitations if you don't "friend" people ;)

I tried searching for you, but there are over 500 Joe Masons and you weren't on the first three pages. Here's a link to my profile

Sure, you'll get lots of invitations to things you cannot attend!

One of my top Facebook tip, which I think you might appreciate... Not only might you get invitation to do stuff with your awesome friends, but you might also get a bunch of ridiculous "application requests". Take good note that in a rather small font, under the "accept" and "ignore" buttons, where they don't want you to find it, you'll find a tiny "ignore this application" link. Click that link. Now you'll have ignored the request and prevented any future silliness of that particular kind.

I basically only get notice of any new popular app like that, and without those annoyances, Facebook is actually okay. It's a bit like if Google Calendar was a bit better at doing mass invites (ever sent a Google Calendar invite to a mailing list?), and it was easier to look up what people you know are up to (I do it with Google Calendar, but I've only got four or five people in there, hardly representative of "what's going on").

Some applications are okay, but those that take your whole address book and fire off invites to all your friends almost automatically, those are very rarely useful.

You will get more invites. If that's still not enough, you can just do what I do:

1. glance at the news feed once a day
2. notice when somebody is going to something that sounds fun, like a sangria-fueled dfcarney going-away party
3. just crash it
4. have tons of fun and make it back home at 5:30 in the morning
